Summer Houses in Skiathos Island
Situation
On the beautiful, lush green island of Skiathos, the deliberate minimal intervention on the hillside was inspired by the purest source: nature itself. It was the environment that led to the architectural conception by hhh Architects to follow the steep slope of the ground, separating the three main volumes from each other and placing them in a linear arrangement parallel to the horizon and the view to the sea. Results
The internal courtyards and covered patios created by the intermediate openings, an integral part of Greek culture, are passages for the cool wind, important during the summer season. The different levels between the volumes contribute to the interlinking between the interior and the exterior, creating a continuity both functional and visual while extending each residence beyond its boundaries. The stone element predominates, making its appearance already from the north, where the main entrance is located, and following a direction similar to that of the slope. The wood and light metal structures add details that emphasize the sense of nature and highlight the contrast with the solid stone volumes. The placement of the large glass openings and minimal aluminium systems facing the sea conceals the intense search for integration with the external environment.
